Last week I got a call from Eileen and Laura over at BEST asking if I was willing to do a little pro bono work. They were working on a project for the Mia Hamm Foundation and needed some help with stills.

Mia Hamm was hosting a Celebrity Soccer Game to raise money and awareness for families in need of bone marrow transplants. The game was hosted by Mia and her husband, LA Dodger, Nomar Garciaparra. Guests included professional soccer stars such as Alexi Lalas, Matt Reis, Kris Klein and Brian Ching and celebrities Rivers Cuomo, Donald Faison, Tony Hawk, Anthony LaPaglia and Mark Consuelos, amongst others.

During the half time break the organization united two anonymous bone marrow donors and their respective recipients for a very emotional introduction. Just imagine meeting the person who was responsible for saving your life; a person who did so without wanting anything in return; someone who didn’t already have an existing personal relationship with you. There wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium.

For those interested in registering as a donor please check out the National Bone Marrow Donor Program.

My hat goes off to photographers that shoot soccer on a regular basis. Pulling focus, tracking the action and trying to compose at the speed necessary to get a decent shot was challenging. I couldn’t imagine how much more difficult it would have been if the athletes were going at full speed.
